Conroe, Texas started off small, began to grow, ran into financial problems, and then hit it big and the town was saved. Today Conroe, Texas is a great place to visit or live and has an amazing history.
History of Conroe, Texas A lumberman named Isaac Conroe set up his sawmill south of the Houston-Crockett line that was owned by the International Great Northern Railroad in 1881. The land had been established in the 1830s, however. After some time passed Conroe decided to move his sawmill closer to the railroad junction. Then, a post office was also established and the area became known as Conroe Switch. However, fewer than 10 years passed and the area was simply known as Conroe, Texas.
As time passed Conroe became larger and more of a community. Cotton, lumber, bricks, and livestock were shipped from Conroe and it was really becoming well known as a shipping hub. With all the shipping activity other commerce showed up including hotels, stores, brickyards, a cotton, gin, and many saw and planing mills. A school district was even introduced and the Courier was the first newspaper established.
Conroe, Texas was incorporated in 1904 and the population was just over 1000. The community continued to grow and succeed. However, the supply of timber started decreasing and the Great Depression also left its mark. As a result, Conroe, Texas suffered tremendously. Conroe’s saving grace was the discovery of oil nearby.
Conroe Today The city of Conroe has grown significantly over the years and now it is even the County Seat. However, the small town atmosphere still remains. There are lots of different recreational possibilities with the Sam Houston National Forest nearby. In addition, Lake Conroe offers many possibilities for recreation.
Conroe real estate is much more affordable than the real estate in nearby Houston, which is about 40 miles away. Because of this, many individuals choose Conroe real estate over Houston real estate since it is cheaper and the commute is better. In fact, over the last few years, the number of new homes built in Conroe, Texas, has really increased, and the home values have as well. For example, in 2000 only 44 new home permits were issued at an average price of $96,500 and in 2005 there were 800 new home permits issued at an average price of $122,400.
It’s obvious that Conroe real estate is really starting to catch on with more homes being built and the average price of those homes increasing, too. So, if you are looking for affordable housing in Conroe you better buy now while the homes are still reasonably priced!
