Magnolia's History Named Mink Prairie for one of its early settlers, Colonel Joseph Mink, in the late 1840s. In September of 1885 the name was shortened to Mink. By 1903 the town had become Magnolia and welcomed the I&GN Railroad. The town’s largest commercial industry by 1915 was the Grogan-Cochran sawmill and many of the 150 residents worked there. The first post office was established in 1858. The original 1901 train depot, restored and located to the original site in the downtown area, greets all visitors and residents as they come to Magnolia on FM 1774 and is a Texas Historical Landmark.
